2024 Fire Prevention Week Proclamation

"Smoke Alarms: Make them WORK for YOU!"

WHEREAS, the City of Statesville is committed to ensuring the safety of all its residents; and

WHEREAS, fire poses a serious public safety risk both locally and nationally, with home fires being the leading cause of fire-related deaths; and

WHEREAS, in 2022, over 2,700 people lost their lives to home fires in the U.S., with fire departments responding to 360,000 home fires; and

WHEREAS, three out of five fire-related deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and smoke alarms significantly reduce the risk of death in a home fire; and

WHEREAS, residents are encouraged to install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on each level of their homes, while ensuring they accommodate family members sensory or physical disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Statesville's first responders are committed to fire prevention through education and protection; and

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week 2024, themed "Smoke Alarms: Make them WORK for You," highlights the importance of having functional smoke alarms. 

THEREFORE, I, Constantine H. Kutteh, Mayor of Statesville, proclaim October 6-12, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week in Statesville, urging all citizens to ensure they have working smoke alarms and to support the Statesville Fire Department's fire safety initiatives. 

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have set my Hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of Statesville to be affixed this 7th day of October 2024.
