City of Statesville Hurricane Preparedness Week

Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 5-11, 2024

As hurricane season approaches (June 1 - November 30, 2024), it's important to make sure that you and your family are prepared for any potential storms that may come your way. The City of Statesville urges residents to plan now for hurricane season and potential severe weather by following these tips to help you get ready:

  1. Stay informed: Keep an eye on the weather reports and stay up-to-date on any potential storms that may be headed our way. You can also sign up for alerts from your local emergency management agency.
  2. Create an emergency kit: Put together a kit that includes basic supplies like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and a battery-operated radio.
  3. Secure your home: Make sure that your windows and doors are securely closed and locked, prior to the arrival of an approaching storm.
  4. Plan for evacuation: If you live in a low-lying area or in a flood zone, have a plan in place for evacuation. Make sure that you know where you'll go and how you'll get there.
  5. Protect important documents: Make copies of important documents like your insurance policies, passports, and birth certificates and store them in a waterproof container.
  6. Have a communication plan: Make sure that you have a way to communicate with family and friends in case of an emergency. You may want to consider setting up a group chat or using a social media platform to stay in touch.

Remember, it's always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared when it comes to hurricanes. Take these steps to ensure that you and your family are ready for whatever may come our way.
